I’m Leah, and I’m passionate about helping people figure out small ways they can make a big difference in the world. Small steps can add up to HUGE progress!
We all know that our world is a big hot mess right now. Pollution everywhere, climate change, oceans filled with plastic, animals dying every day due to abuse and habitat destruction… Human right abuses, dangerous working conditions and wages well below enough to live on, people being bought and sold and trafficked like a product, lack of access to safe drinking water, food, shelter, education… It goes on and on.
It can all feel like it’s just too much. Where do you even start? Will it make any difference?
I think the answer is YES.
I’m not a billionaire that could use my money to provide clean water for every person on the planet with a snap of my fingers. And I’m not ready to go what my husband calls “full hippy” and completely withdraw from my suburban culture. I’m just a regular gal, living in suburban Indiana.
I drive a Subaru to my part-time job, raise my two kids, go to the movies with my husband, buy too much stuff via AmazonPrime, and eat food from a drive through more than I probably should. I love living within 15 minutes of everything, and having enough money for all the basic necessities, plus plenty of extra for vacation and toys and almost anything else I want (within reason).
But I want to make sure I don’t take those luxuries for granted, and I want to do what I can to help take care of the Earth and give to those who don’t have access to the same things I do.
I hope you’ll join me.
This blog will be my way to share small steps you can take to change the way your life impacts the world. It can be as simple as buying eggs from the local farmers market (supporting local agriculture instead of corporations that abuse and mistreat their poultry — don’t worry, I’ll give you the lowdown in an upcoming post). It might cost an extra couple of bucks, but it’s worth it to me.
We’re not going to solve all of the problems of the world today, this week, this year, or even in our lifetime. But this quote from Clarissa Pinko Estes’ Letter to a Young Activist During Troubled Times gives me hope.
Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.
What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.
So, keep your eyes peeled for products, tips and tricks, and thoughts on this whole “saving the world” business. Thanks for being here with me, and please send me your thoughts, ideas, and any awesome companies YOU know about!
Let’s do this!
